Traffic Signals and Hand Signals

Interpretation of traffic lights (RAG), arrow signals, and hand signals by drivers and police.

5. Traffic Signals and Hand Signals

5.1 The Red-Amber-Green (RAG) System

While the standard traffic light sequence is universally understood, Singapore employs specific arrow signals that mandate precise reactions.

The Amber Light

  • Meaning: The amber light is a STOP signal. It is not a signal to accelerate.
  • Exception: A driver may proceed only if they are so close to the stop line that stopping would cause a sudden, dangerous deceleration or an accident.
  • Assessment Scenario: Question: “The traffic light turns amber as you approach. You can stop safely. What should you do?” Answer: “Stop.” (Distractor: “Accelerate to clear the junction” is incorrect).12

Arrow Signals

  • Green Arrow: Proceed in the direction of the arrow. This overrides a red circular light. For example, if the main light is Red but the Right Green Arrow is on, you may turn right.
  • Amber Arrow: Prepare to stop turning. If the vehicle has already crossed the stop line, complete the turn.
  • Flickering Green Arrow: This indicates the signal is about to change to amber. Drivers should not accelerate to “beat” the light but prepare to stop. This is a crucial safety feature to clear the turning pocket.19

5.2 Hand Signals: Driver and Police

Hand signals serve as a backup communication method. The BTT tests three primary signals used by drivers and the overriding authority of police signals.

Driver Hand Signals These are performed with the right arm extending out of the driver’s window 21:

  • Turning Left: The right arm extends out, and the forearm rotates in a counter-clockwise circle.
  • Turning Right: The right arm extends straight out, palm facing front.
  • Slowing Down/Stopping: The right arm extends out, moving up and down with the palm facing down.

Police Hand Signals

  • Hierarchy: Signals given by a police officer override all traffic lights, signs, and road markings.
  • Assessment Scenario: Question: “The traffic light is Red, but a traffic police officer beckons you to proceed. What do you do?” Answer: “Proceed as directed by the officer.”.23
