Getting Started: Driving Licences in Singapore

Introduction

The Basic Theory of Driving handbook is essential reading for all road users, covering the Highway Code to promote road safety. Disobeying these rules may result in fines, demerit points, or disqualification.

Fitness to Drive

To qualify for a driving licence, an applicant must be at least 18 years old and pass the test of competence. They must not suffer from mental disorders, epilepsy, or sudden attacks of giddiness . Applicants must also be able to read a vehicle licence plate at 25 metres and distinguish the colours red, amber, and green.

Licence Classes

  • Class 2B: Motorcycles not exceeding 200cc or 15kw (Electric).
  • Class 3: Motor cars not exceeding 3000kg unladen weight with not more than 7 passengers.
  • Class 3A: Automatic transmission motor cars only.

Provisional Driving Licence (PDL)

After passing the Basic Theory Test (BTT), you may apply for a PDL to start learning on the roads. It is valid for 2 years. “L” plates must be displayed during lessons.

Validity

For Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, the driving licence is valid for a lifetime. For foreigners on work passes, it is valid for up to 5 years.
