Tests, Probation, and the DIPS System
The Testing Curriculum
- Basic Theory Test (BTT): Tests knowledge of traffic rules, signs, and signals. A pass is required to proceed to advanced tests.
- Final Theory Test (FTT): Required for Class 3/3A. Tests driving safety and interaction with road users.
- Practical Test: Conducted by a Traffic Police appointed examiner.
New Drivers (Probation)
New drivers are under probation for one year. During this time, they must display the Probation Plate (P-Plate) at the top right of the front and rear windscreens. Failure to display the plate can lead to licence revocation for repeat offenders. Accumulating 13 demerit points during probation also results in revocation.
Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS)
DIPS is designed to identify and rehabilitate errant drivers.
- Suspension: A non-probationary motorist with no previous record is suspended if they accumulate 24 points within 24 months.
- Remission: Motorists liable for 1st or 2nd suspension may take a retraining course to reduce their suspension period.
- Incentives: Being free of offences for 12 months clears a driver’s demerit record. A clean record for 3 years grants an insurance discount.
